Longtime State Representative Stephanie Kifowit has officially entered the race to replace Suzana Mendoza for the Illinois State Comptroller’s seat. Mendoza announced she would not seek another term.

So far, Lake County Treasurer Holly Kim and State Representative Margaret Croke have announced their candidacy. State Senator Karina Villa is expected to announce. This could be a four way race in the primary.

Kifowit has served six terms in the Illinois General Assembly, representing the 84th district. She is a Marine Corps veteran who served from 1990 to 1994. Prior to running for the house seat, Kifowit worked at First National Bank of Chicago in private banking and later as a registered financial advisor with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.

She touts her financial management background and service as an elected official as preparation for the job. On her website she says she “is ready to bring decades of budget expertise, integrity, and independence to the Comptroller’s office” and “understands every dollar — over $100 billion — flowing through the office and will ensure it is managed responsibly and transparently.
